FAQ

Question from my friend Ole Asserbo Christiansen founder of  “European carp and predator anglers united

1 – YOU’VE FALLEN IN LOVE WITH THAILAND IN MORE THAN ONE TERM. WHAT BROUGHT YOU OUT THERE IN THE FIRST PLACE?

In first place I am a traveler and travelling in that part of the world is quite easy and safe (and cheap especially when you are young!). My first trip to Thailand was in 2007, where I fell in love with my Thai Wife (just married!). Since then I visited Vietnam, Cambodia, Lao, Singapore and Indonesia. My next trip could be in Myanmar.

2 – YOU RUN A GUIDE SERVICE OUT THERE AS WELL, PRIMARY ON WILD RIVER FISH SUCH AS SNAKEHEADS. TELL US A BIT ABOUT WHAT THE CUSTOMERS COULD EXPECT?

This kind of fishing trips aren’t easy to arrange because they have lots of logistic and costs containing isn’t easy. The customer needs to be healthy and prepared to fish 6-8 hours, 40°C and 80% humidity. I guess it is one of the most awesome fishing experience that a skilled angler can enjoy in his whole life. It’s just real fishing in a stunning environment.

3 – YOU’RE STILL LIVING IN ITALY AND HAVING A DAY JOB. HOW MUCH TIME DO YOU SPEND IN THAILAND PR. YEAR AND HAVE YOU EVER CONSIDERED MOVING OUT THERE PERMANENTLY?

I try to go to Thailand at least two times a year, sometimes just a stopover of few days (bkk airport is one of the main hub in that area). I would like to move to Thailand one day, but it is still too early, give me some 5 -10 years!

4 – HOW WOULD A GUIDED DAY OUT WITH YOU OR ONE OF YOUR GUIDES LOOKS LIKE?

I am not a guide myself first of all. Second I am still working in Italy, last but not least my guides are much better than me!!! Actually we work with a net of about 30 guides (two groups of 6 people each are set up for giant stingray). Thai people are very friendly and I can guarantee that guides are very professional. The water ecosystem here is amazing, it’s so rich in life but also requires some specific fishing tactics, I guess an expert guide is fundamental to get the right fishing approach, and consequently to hook some serious fishes!

5 – WOULD THERE BE ANY PERIODS OF THE YEAR THAT YOU WOULD CONSIDER TO BE MORE PRODUCTIVE FOR WILD RIVER FISHING IN THAILAND THAN OTHERS?

Normally the best season for giant snakehead is the rainy season, that merge the spawn season. For goonch catfish and giant stingray the only problem could be river levels, but we always try to find the most productive spot for that time of the year and target species.

6 – I KNOW YOU’VE FISHED FOR MOST SPECIES IN YOUR HOME LAND ITALY, AND AT SOME POINT YOU MENTIONED THAT PIKE IS BECOMMING MORE AND MORE RARE ON DIFFRENT LOCATIONS, WOULD YOU KNOW WHY?

In Italy we have both Northern pike and the Italian pike, an endemic subspecies that grows slower and is less aggressive (see picture). Both of them (especially the second one) are in strong contraction due to loss of spawning areas, overfishing and appearing of alien competitive species like European catfish, that are more resistant to pollution and very adaptable to environmental changes.

7 – IT’S MY IMPRESSION THAT YOU MOSTLY LURE FISH FOR PREDATORS, BOTH IN ITALY AND IN THAILAND. WHAT SORT OF LURES AND GEAR WOULD YOU PREFER FOR THE DIFFRENT SPECIES YOU TARGET?

The past 15 years I’ve been a 100% pure lure angler, but maybe I will break my own rules because of my new activity? When I can, I fish with casting tackle because I feel it is more comfortable and relaxing. I use every kind of artificial lures, it depends what I am targeting: rubber, jig, spinnerbait, jerk, minnow, crank etc. What I love the most is surface fishing.

8 – I KNOW YOU HAVE AN AMAZING STOCK OF EUROPEAN CATFISH IN THE RIVER PO, AS WELL AS IN SOME OF LAKES. BESIDES THAT YOU’LL FIND SOME OF THE AMERICAN CATFISH SPICIES IN CERTAIN LAKES AS WELL. HAVE YOU EVER CONSIDERED THE OPPORTUNITY OF MAKING A GUIDED SERVICE IN ITALY AS WELL?

Wels catfish is well stocked in the whole Po basin, as well in some important rivers of central Italy like Arno and Tevere. I know that in the Arno river there’s also a stable population of channel catfish and blue catfish. In many provinces catch & release of alien species is strictly forbidden. I am realistic and I guess that every European angler that knows just a little about catfishing can reach good results by himself, maybe he just needs to rent a local boat!

9 – WHAT WOULD BE YOUR BEST MEMORABLE CATCH FROM ITALY AS WELL AS THAILAND?

This is the easiest question you could ask  -It’s always the next one!

10 – FUTURE GOALS ON FISHING AT HOME AND ABROAD?

Next winter I would like to land a big Aspen over 90 cm, last year I got 5-6 fish between 70-80 cm but over 90 cm would be a big deal!!!

For Thailand my dream would be a giant snakehead over 7 kg and I am already planning a trip to get my first goonch and chao phraya catfish as well.
